I filed for my return using TaxAct last year and again this year. I didn't have a problem getting my return direct deposited into my bank account. But last year right before I clicked the file button. It told me that "Republic bank charges a transaction fee of $55.00. Which is kinda screwy but oh well.

This year they told me that there was a 15.00 charge "product fee"(whatever the hell that is) plus - a $20 transaction fee from "Republic Bank".

Next year Ill probably go through someone that does'nt charge nonsense fees when it can be done for free.

All in all - youll get *most* of your return, and you'll be a sucker like me!

January 20, 2010 prepped my 2009 return in TAXACT so I would be ready for my W-2's to enter correctly. Already had done a preliminary to see what I would be getting back partly with doing a guestimation from last paycheck on January 20. Called IRS Feb 5 to find out that taxes were being rejected because all of my information entered on January 20th (mine and my children's DOB, SSN and such) was filed that night by someone and funds were auto deposited into some checking account somewhere else. I sent TAXACT this information and their response is we are investigating it but we see in the past that other sources outside TAXACT can do this. What I had failed to tell them was my children's information was taken too and the only place this is stored was their system. They of course think it was just mine information....not it was the whole return stolen. They aren't going to want to own up to it. Will never use them again. Can't wait till the IRS gets a hold of this one.

I have been using the program for 4 yrs. It's very easy and the money is always deposited when it is said to be there. Now for some reason my state is sending me audits for my taxes asking for money back, for 3 tax yrs. I am pissed because the program calulates what u get. I won't be using Tax act again.

I recently filed my 2009 income through Taxact. I have filed with them in the past but, My Aunt filed 1 week later than I did and she received her money already and I'm still waiting for my refund. I called the customer service number to ask what is the delay and the Rep couldn't tell me anything, I knew more information about my refund then she did. If you want a fast refund and someone who knows what they are talking about, please go to TurboTax, no more TaxAct.

The program works great. For the past 7 years I have used TaxAct without any problems. People that complain must have got used to someone doing their taxes for them or they don't know how to use the computer that well. Everything comes with a manual, but no one wants to read the instructions. That's why companies always get everyone with the fine print. Follow the instruction and stop complaining.

for my first time, it was really easy. it's very easy to follow the step by step instructions. i would recommend it for those who are filing as single and w/out dependents, and other additional stuff.  well, im hopin' i'll get my return on time.

They charged me for e-file, even though it was supposed to be included in the purchase price.  Rip-off.

I used to use it when I just had simple income, etc. No state return. Now I'm a grown up and I have homeowner credits and such, they charge me money to finish the file. Then they say(after paying) that they can't file that particular return electronically.

Then after that, I finally agree to print it out and mail it (ugh) they tell me they don't have all the necessary forms. (i.e. Form 5405).

I recommend you do not use Tax Act if you aren't filing a simple return.

have used taxact for a number of years.  never have a problem.  with taxact when they say "free"....it is really free.  money has always been direct deposited on the date promised.  great program.

I used to use H&R Block and pay them literally hundreds of dollars to file my taxes for me, but i saw a commercial for Taxact and decided to give it a try. I used the free online version, and it was a simple program to use. My return was processed in 48 hours, just like they told me it would be. They say my refund will be here in 10 days..I'm on day 4, so we'll see. I gave it 4 rather than 5 stars only because the navigation can get a bit confusing. Other than that, i would recommend this program to anyone who is capable of using a computer, and the internet.

I am a professional tax preparer who has been using 2nd Story Software's product, TaxAct, for over 6 years.

I was recently contacted by several of my clients as they received a notice from the state indicating an error on their 2006 Maryland Tax Returns. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that TaxAct's 2006 MD State software contained an error. (A number that should have been carried over from the Federal Tax Return to the State Tax return did not, causing an an understated state income.)

TaxAct was notified, provided with all applicable data, and promised to resolve the problem. One week later, TaxAct informed me that although their software did in fact contain a mistake, they would not reimburse any of my clients the interest and penalties that MD State has imposed as a direct result of their error. They informed me that I should have manually changed the numbers, even though their tax software specifically instructs against it.

I am amazed and appalled that this company will not stand behind their product. I will not use TaxAct again and advise anyone AGAINST using TaxAct.

Please, if you want to keep your money don't and I mean don't use them. They took my money and then I went to see my refund and it said it wasn't filed

Now I'm 299$ short and might be in trouble with the state. It screwed me, and my aunt, and my mother, and my 97 year old grandma... who trusted these people.

I wanted to like it; I really did. But it made a series of weird mistakes and I lost faith in it:
  • Prompted me for partnership K-1s, but not S-corp K-1s.. I had to manually circle back and find it in the list. It had skipped right over it for some reason.
  • Even after doing that, it somehow decided that the K-1 S-Corp income was rental income. (???)
  • When I then tried to return to the sequence, it said "Great! Let's review your federal return and start on state.." even though I had only gotten a third of a way through the federal interview. Seriously not confidence inspiring.
  • Did not provide any indication of how to account for basis in K-1s. (Prompts for active/passive participation, at-risk status, but not basis, nor is there any indication any of the online help about how to enter limitations on deductible s-corp losses due to basis.. even though it prompts for carryover disallowed losses from previous years to trick you into thinking that it knows what it's doing.) So for "ordinary business income," am I supposed to enter the K-1 figure, or the basis adjusted figure, or what? I didn't have any confidence that either of these was the correct answer, and that's when I jumped ship for Turbotax.
  • And to top it all off, the website got unusably slow on the evening of April 15 (I know, I know..) Like up to a minute to load each page, which is a horror, because there seems to be a page for every single line on some forms.
On the whole, I 'liked' using TaxACT better than the online edition of either TurboTax or Taxcut, but software-wise, it's just not ready for the prime time. Maybe next year?

I had used tax act for the past three years. I will NOT be using it again. The wait for subsequent screens was excruciating. The ability to navigate to where I needed to go was impossible. I could not find a way to get back to posting 1099-DIV information after picking up where I left off a few weeks ago.

Completely frustrated and way too late in the evening - I ended up doing a web search for 'free online tax'. With the use of Turbo Tax, I was done in less than an hour.

TaxACT is horrible. Certainly not free if you consider that your time is worth something - and this year, they were nothing but a total waste of time.

Horrible. It is painfully slow, I have had multiple freezes and it won't let me change incorrect bank info. I will never use this program again.
